| Graduated from Winchester School of Art in 1993 and then moved to Colchester in 1997 to teach art at the Sixth Form College. My painting has evolved and matured since working in a variety of studios in the Colchester area. My current studio is part of the Cuckoo Farm Studios complex, where there are thirty artists. As well as my teaching and artistic commitments I am vice chairperson and secretary of the committee that runs Cuckoo Farm Studios. My paintings are concerned with surface, shape, colour, form, line and texture. I use the shapes around me in order to start a painting and the tools I use, such as rollers, suggest the direction of the painting. My initial inspiration are the shapes found in natural forms such as oyster shells but I have developed a theme of transformation, growth and movement and each painting is a response to a previous painting. I found using brushes on a
large scale restrictive and have used gloss rollers to make my marks -
alongside brushes and sponges. A series of work uses chickenwire as a
mask in order to achieve layers of colour reminiscent of Seurat's pointilism
and Severini's futuristim. Sand is sometimes mixed with the paint creating
a very tactile, rich surface. The shapes emerge through the process but
there is a moment when I decide that the shapes are set and start to sculpt
them with layers of tonal washes. My latest paintings are concerned with
deep colour and its application over a light ground in order to achieve
a luminescent colour. |
